Hot Coffee in the Morning
© 1980 Babette (Brown) Edwards
Nothing is more warming
Than hot coffee in the morning
With Someone so disarming
That my candor’s not alarming.
And nothing’s more relaxing
Than hot coffee in the morning
With Someone who’s not asking
For pomp and grammar taxing.
Nothing’s more reviving
Than hot coffee in the morning
With Someone who’s not striving
Against you, nor conniving.
No, nothing has more meaning
Than hot coffee in the morning
With Someone Who is giving
You sought water that is living.

We started off
Like water and grapes:
Had acidic times,
And pulp and even some twigs.
But over 34 years, our relationship
mellowed
To a fine wine
The thoughts of which are still …
Intoxicating.

About The Author
Foreword
Christ rose early to spend time alone with His Father before choosing His disciples. After a long day of ministry, He took time alone before He walked on water. There is an unmistakable pattern. Time alone with the Father serves as preparation for life’s journey. A relationship with Christ lays the foundation for making real-world decisions and staying afloat amidst the erratic pace of our culture. Without a relationship with Christ, we’re all like explorers without a compass and destined to lose track of priorities.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Christ reminds busy people that if any man comes after Him they must deny themselves, take up their cross daily and follow Him. God’s heart beats daily.
Taking time with Him each day is a simple way to thank God for life. Disciples were called followers of The Way.
They followed Christ so consistently that the title Christian
best describes their commitment. A consistent devotional life opens the door for followers to catch the heart of Christ. Without consistently pursuing God, it’s impossible to capture the heart of Christ.
Babette is more than a devotional writer, she’s an artist who can choreograph real life to the rhythm of Scripture. This devotional is easy to read and provides real-life applications through the lens of Scripture. You receive critical challenges, thought-provoking questions, and a user-friendly way to capture the heart of the Savior. This resource sets itself apart as a whisper in a noisy world.
If you invest the time, this devotional extends the hand of Christ and takes you on a journey that will enrich every area of your life.

Praise For Hot Coffee
One of my favorite selections from the book is How to Become Unstuck.
I love this reflection because it is fresh and raw and unashamedly transparent about her struggles and the way she has unwaveringly turned to God for help and strength. Babette’s unique take on Scripture is Biblical but also infused with refreshing humor and insight.

Listen to her personal testimony of how she has applied the finished work of Christ to her own life: When I ponder the fact that Jesus said, ‘It is finished,’ that supersedes my need for perfection in everything. Instead of striving and stressing, I’m learning to pray, listen for God’s direction and work with my eyes on Him.

Dear Elder Babette,
I won’t give an awesome God something that cost me nothing
(2 Samuel 24:24). You have already paid the price for this devotion. You have already been awarded the TOP TORMENTOR (mentor) award! God noticed all the prayer meetings, work Bible Studies, National Day of Prayer celebrations and door-to-door witnessing that you dragged me to. Well, this book will go to the houses God already ordained!
Love you much,

About This Devotional
Guess you can tell I like coffee. It’s deep-seated in my being from my mom and grandparents. Since I was a child, coffee represented a way to start the day, have a conversation and believe it or not —calm my nerves
—as my Grandma Corrie Belle would say!
I imagine we’re sitting down talking about Jesus and how He cares for every aspect of our lives. So, whether you like a steamy, creamy cup of slightly sweet java like me, prefer water, or just come with your cup of gratitude or curiosity—let’s talk about the One Who loves us dearly.
How To Use This Devotional
Instead of the traditional January – December format, Hot Coffee in the Morning (Hot Coffee for short) is divided into these sections:
• Percolating Prudence
– Thirty-one short devotions taken from each of the 31 chapters of Proverbs. Regardless of when you receive Hot Coffee, you can begin our conversations here, then continue to the other parts of the book. You can also return to this section anytime you like. Since there are 31 chapters of Proverbs, you can also challenge yourself to read a chapter of Proverbs that corresponds with that day of the month and write on a different truth that stands out to you.
• Special Days
– Let’s face it – special days are often busy days. Even with the best of intentions, we can find ourselves so preoccupied, we lose focus and miss the point of the holiday! And because the busyness of the holiday never takes place just on the holiday, there is more than one devotional for some special days. For example, you can pick one devotion to read on December 25th or pick several to read throughout the Christmas Season.
• Daily Devotions
– This is the largest section of the devotional and covers the widest variety of topics. Rather than be tied to a date on the calendar, you can start these any time of the year. And — (who says you must go to a new devotion every day?) — you can stay on a devotion as long as you like before moving on to another one.
• Looking for a Specific Blend?
– This is an Index of Topics for those times when you have a particular subject or issue in mind.

Grammar & Punctuation
There are just some words I always want to give special honor: Word (when referring to the Bible), Who, Whom, His, Him, etc. will be capitalized when referring to God. satan on the other hand, gets a small ‘s.’
How This Devotional Came To Be
The individual devotions in Hot Coffee were written over a span of more than twenty years. In 1997, I took over facilitating a Bible Study for people who wanted to have lunch together once a week to pray and study the Bible. As is typical with a busy office, friends would see me in the hall or pass my desk and exclaim something like this, Oh no – was Bible Study today? I can’t believe I forgot!
So, I started sending weekly reminders.
Eventually, I began including Scriptures and talking points to make better use of our 45-minute meetings.
In compiling these notes into the Hot Coffee devotional, we’ve edited the devotions to make the content and illustrations current and relatable beyond the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) region where many of them were written.
I owe a huge debt of gratitude to the Bible Study and to everyone who shared their hopes, fears, tears, dreams and prayers. We are fulfilling the law of Christ by carrying one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2).
I hope you’ll find these conversations about our Best Friend are just the beginning. My prayer for you is that they will help spark a never-ending conversation with the Lord Jesus Christ, Who wants to be everyone’s Best Friend—the One Who loves us most!
Percolating Prudence
wa.png
My grandparents had a percolator. That coffee pot had a few dents between its silver-colored base and glass cover knob, but it made the best coffee!
Each morning, my grandfather, Daddy Les,
put cold water in the bottom compartment, coffee grounds into the metal basket, secured the pot with the lid and set the pot on the stove over a medium flame. At first, nothing seemed to happen. But as the heat rose and the liquid cycled through those coffee grounds, a rich aroma would waft through the house, accosting any cobwebs in your brain and beckoning you to the kitchen.
At first, some sayings in Proverbs may seem like that cold pot of coffee—uninteresting and unrelatable. However, meditating on Scripture is like turning up the heat. Applying wisdom is called prudence.
to give prudence to the simple,
knowledge and discretion to the youth—
Let the wise hear and increase in learning,
and the one who understands obtain guidance,
Proverbs 1:4,5 (ESV)
The tendency to make prudent decisions gets stronger—like my granddaddy’s coffee—the longer you let God’s Word percolate in your heart.
Increase
The wise also will hear and increase in learning,
and the person of understanding will acquire
skill and attain to sound counsel [so that he
may be able to steer his course rightly]
Proverbs 1:5 (AMP)
As we begin our journey of daily downloading
the wisdom of God, one of our goals must be: increase. Growth should always be our goal.
This verse from the first chapter of Proverbs states that those who are wise will hear (stop to listen) and increase in learning (apply what they heard).
Let’s ask God to help us increase in becoming more and more like Him daily.
Action Plan
1. Read Proverbs Chapter 1.
2. Write a different nugget of wisdom that stands out to you from this chapter of Proverbs:
From God
For the Lord gives skillful and godly Wisdom; from
His mouth come knowledge and understanding.
Proverbs 2:6 (AMP)
In yesterday’s daily download, we focused on asking for God’s increase. It’s important to remember that we need God’s wisdom in all things. Otherwise, we may be seeking something that looks like increase, but is not.
In asking God for His wisdom, we are acknowledging that there is other wisdom from other sources. Some sources of wisdom include what friends say, the media, popular songs and so much more.
Father, forgive us for running here and there and not asking You first for your opinion on things. Give us Your skillful and godly wisdom.
Asking God for increase only works if we decide to receive and apply His wisdom.
Action Plan
1. Read Proverbs Chapter 2.
2. Write a different nugget of wisdom that stands out to you from this chapter of Proverbs:
Receive
For whom the Lord loves He corrects, even as a
father corrects the son in whom he delights.
Proverbs 3:2 (AMP)
Now, if we’ve asked God for His increase (day 1) and have looked to Him for His wisdom (day 2), we really should not be too surprised about this step. God’s correction is what keeps us going straight.
I used to really put myself down when God corrected me. Now, I just thank Him because He saw my need for correction and loved me enough to work on me.
Sometimes, we think we’re really all right and don’t need much work. However, the more we look into the Bible and see Jesus, the more we will also see our need for correction.
Action Plan
1. Read Proverbs Chapter 3.
2. Write a different nugget of wisdom that stands out to you from this chapter of Proverbs:
Observe
Consider well the path of your feet,
and let all your ways be established and ordered aright.
Proverbs 4:26 (AMP)
Ever start out with good intentions and then wonder what happened? I think it’s like being on a sailboat—once you begin on track, you must also remain vigilant, so you don’t get off course.
As we continue growing in Christ, we’ll begin to recognize which things cause us to get off track. For example, if every time I’m around someone, I’m tempted to think negative thoughts, I should choose to limit my time with this person. If I already know that certain places or activities distract me from God’s purpose and plan for me, I’ve got to pray about these things and make some tough decisions to avoid those temptations.
Let’s pray,
Father, help us to see that our relationship with You is our priority and that we must be watchful of things that can make it seem hard to enjoy closeness with You.
[Proverbs 4:26; Matthew 6:13]
Action Plan
1. Read Proverbs Chapter 4.
2. Write a different nugget of wisdom that stands out to you from this chapter of Proverbs:
Restrict
[Confine yourself to your own wife] let your children be
for you alone, and not the children of strangers with you.
Proverbs 5:17 (AMP)
Most of us don’t like the word restriction
very much. We don’t want to have our rights
infringed upon at all. However, if we are going to experience the God-kind of success that is available to us, we must at times use self-discipline and restrict ourselves.
For instance, in the passage below, King Solomon used an immoral woman to personify temptation. He warned his hearers against infidelity* in marriage and promiscuity:
Stay away from her!
Don’t go near the door of her house!
If you do, you will lose your honor
and will lose to merciless people all you have achieved.
Proverbs 5:8,9 (NLT)
Keep in mind, however, that self-restriction (self-discipline) goes far beyond this example. There are blessings awaiting the ones who will ask God to help us appreciate what He has provided and help us to use wisdom in all areas of life including: eating, sleeping, studying, working, and planning (Acts17:28).
Let’s pray,
Father, help me to be a better steward of everything that You have given. Help me to trust You with food, friends, finances, family and anything else. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
[Proverbs 5:17; Proverbs 3:5]
*See also the Proverbs 27 devotional, Stay.
Action Plan
1. Read Proverbs Chapter 5.
2. Write a different nugget of wisdom that stands out to you from this chapter of Proverbs:
86915.jpg
There are blessings awaiting the ones who will use
godly wisdom in all areas of life including: eating,
sleeping, studying, working, and planning.
86912.jpg
Think
Can a man take fire in his bosom and
his clothes not be burned?
Proverbs 6:27 (AMP)
Some actions just have consequences. We become most successful when we can think ahead of time and make right choices that are not based on emotions, but on truth.
As we journey on in life, sometimes we must look truth in the eye and not live based on what we wish were so. As much as we’d like, we cannot do just anything we want without having to pay a price of some sort.
Maturity means we avoid as many dumb mistakes as we can. Amen.
Action Plan
1. Read Proverbs Chapter 6.
2. Write a different nugget of wisdom that stands out to you from this chapter of Proverbs:
Guard
Keep my commandments and live, and keep my law
and teaching as the apple (the pupil) of your eye.
Proverbs 7:2 (AMP)
Do you know that the average person’s eyes blink over 22,000 times each day? Like windshield wipers, our eyelids flush moisturizers over our eyes and help keep foreign matter from entering in and irritating our eyes. Though we blink all day, this happens so quickly that we usually do not even notice that it is happening.
God designed all that to protect our eyes.
So when God instructs us to keep His commandments like the apple (pupil) of the eye, He’s letting us know that we cannot treat His Word like it’s a casual F.Y.I.
The Greek word for keep means to protect, save life.
We are responsible for doing all that we can to protect God’s Word in our lives.
Let’s Pray,
Father, help us to better stand guard over our thoughts so that we don’t allow
faith-stealers to come in and run rampant in our minds. Help us to cut off some things that may cause Your principles to seem unimportant or outdated. Make us uncomfortable when music, movies, books or other media contradict Your clear instructions and mindset. We declare that Your Word works in us! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
[Proverbs 4:23; Psalm 119:9]
Action Plan
1. Read Proverbs
